Tension prevails on second day

Tension continues to prevail on the second day in Katigenahalli in Tumakuru taluk a day after more than 11 people, including nine police personnel, suffered injuries in clashes that erupted after an employee of Tumakuru University allegedly committed suicides.

The suicide is suspected to be in connection with the acquisition of land for a solid waste plant near Ajjagondanahalli.

On Sunday, the villagers were steadfast in their demand not to bury the body of Shivakumar (31), a daily-wage worker with the University who had allegedly committed suicide. The villagers further demanded that the Deputy Commissioner announce compensation to the family of the deceased, while, giving an assurance that the solid waste plant would be shifted from the village.

The body is still being kept at Shivakumar’s house at Katigenahalli. “We will not allow to bury the body until the Deputy Commissioner comes to the spot and assure them of shifting the solid waste plant from their village,” said Nandish of Singrahalli, a protestor.

Meanwhile, Abdul Khader, police inspector, who suffered a head injury after the clashes, is said to be out of danger. He is receiving treatment at NIMHANS, Bengaluru.

While, P.Ravi, sub-inspector, Prashanth, head constables of DAR (District Armed Reserve), S.Mahadevappa, Jayarudraswamy, police constables, Gurukameshwaraswamy, Manohar Babu, Narasimhamurthy, Jagadish Naik, have been discharged from the Tumakuru district government hospital, villagers, Shankaraiah and Chandrashekaraiah are still taking treatment.

Deputy Commissioner, K.S.Sathyamurthy told The Hindu , “Tumakuru City Municipal Corporation had acquired 40 acres 24 gunta land near Ajjagondanahalli for the establishment of solid waste plant.”

He said the district administration was following the directions of the High Court in setting up the plant, and the compensation of Rs. 27.56 lakh was with the court.

He clarified that the land of the deceased had not been acquired.

Compensation: Tahsildar, Maruthi Prasanna said compensation of Rs. 20,000 will be given to the family under the National Family Benefit

Scheme: While, Rs.1,000 will be given for the funeral as he is a BPL cardholder. Similarly, the formalities were underway for providing widow pension to the wife of the deceased, he said.

Sunday saw numerous local political leaders and top police officials visiting the village.
