There was tension on the main campus of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) at Kadaganchi village in Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district following a noisy protest by students demanding action against miscreants who allegedly attacked three students staying in a hostel building in the village on Monday night.

Students, who walked out of their classes and staged a demonstration in front of the administrative block of the university on Tuesday, alleged that three students hailing from Andhra Pradesh and pursuing their Masters course in the Department of Geography were initially threatened outside the hostel building and later assaulted in the hostel room.

However, the students were silent on why they went outside the hostel building late in the night and why the victims or the other students staying in the private building used as hostel did not file a complaint with the police till late in the evening on Tuesday.

Police officials attached to the Narona Police Station under whose limits the university main campus and the village fall, told The Hindu that they had specifically asked the victims of the attack to file a written complaint to enable them to register a case and initiate action against those who had allegedly assaulted them. So far, the police have not registered any case in this connection.

When contacted, Vice-Chancellor of the university H.M. Maheshwaraiah, who was in Dharwad for a meeting, told The Hindu over phone that the university would file a complaint if the students were ready to give it in writing.

Meanwhile, the university has also appointed a fact-finding committee to go into the issue.

The protesting students identified the alleged victims of the attack as Sunder Rao, Anil Behara and Vinay. They then submitted a memorandum to Pro Vice-Chancellor G.R. Naik.
