The State government has decided to set up 10 fast track courts to deal with cases pertaining to crimes against women, according to Law Minister and Tumkur district in charge T.B. Jayachandra.

This will ensure speedy delivery of justice, he said after inaugurating the World Literacy Day programme here on Sunday.

Mr. Jayachandra said the government was committed to ensuring the safety of girls and women.

He said according to the 2001 Census, literacy rate in the State was 67 per cent. In Karnataka, while literacy rate among men was 76, it was 56 among women, he said, and added that this was because of gender disparity.

Rafeeq Ahmed, MLA, and M.R. Hulinayakar, MLC, were present.
