If everything goes as per plan, the much-delayed works on laying a synthetic track at R.N. Shetty district stadium here will be completed by May.
B. Srinivas, Assistant Director, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, told The Hindu that the works were under progress.
Asphaltation of the track would begin from Monday and would continue for five days. Fencing works would be taken up afterwards before starting the works on laying the synthetic track, he said.
Once the synthetic track is laid, the stadium will be fit for hosting State and national-level athletics meets. The department will host a State-level athletic meet in November.
“Last year, the district was asked to host the meet, but we lost the opportunity due to the delay in completing the track. This year, we will not lose the opportunity,” Mr. Srinivas said.
It has been a long pending demand of the sportspersons here to lay the synthetic track at the stadium. However, the demand was fulfilled only in November, 2012, as the government released Rs 3.69 crore to lay a 400-metre synthetic track here after much public outcry.
