Suspected Maoist killed near Kukke Subramanya

September 06, 2012 11:15 am | Updated 11:15 am IST - Mangalore:

A suspected Maoist was killed in an encounter in the forests around Kulkunda, near Kukke Subramanya, on Wednesday.

According to Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) officials, around 2 a.m., personnel patrolling in the forests spotted a group of alleged Maoists and opened fire. One died on the spot, while the others fled.

ANF Inspector-General of Police Alok Kumar said the Maoists returned fire. The ANF did not report any injuries.

“We are still uncertain about the identity of the Maoist killed. Operations have been intensified to find the others still in the forests,” said Mr. Kumar.

After the brief encounter, the ANF intensified combing operations and unearthed a camp. Though only a country-made rifle was found at the camp — and a weapon seized from the slain person — the forces also found pamphlets about Maoist ideology in Tamil and Kannada.

Sources said the man killed was aged around 35, and was probably from Kerala or Tamil Nadu.
