A 31-year old woman died here on Monday night due to suspected H1N1 (swine flu).

Yashoda (31), daughter of Range Gowda in Devarayapatna near here, was admitted to Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences with high fever around 10.30 p.m. on Monday and she breathed her last late in the night.

Dr. K. Shankar, Medical Superintendent of HIMS, told The Hindu that the patient was admitted to a private hospital in Hassan on Monday evening. The private hospital staff referred her to HIMS suspecting H1N1 infection. “The patient reached our hospital around 10.30 p.m. As there were not beds vacant in the Intensive Care Unit, we admitted her in casualty and provided her ventilator facility. Later she was shifted ICU after getting a bed vacated. However she died late in the night”, he said.

Mr. Shankar said that blood sample had been sent to laboratory in Manipal to confirm if she died of H1N1. Relatives of the deceased, on Tuesday, staged a protest in front of HIMS alleging negligence of the doctors for her death.

Officers of the Health Department have visited Devarayapatna to conduct a survey and spread awareness among local public about the infection.
