This Children's Day, global internet security firm McAfee released a survey on the online behaviour of children in India. The survey found that while 62 per cent of children polled shared personal information online, no less than 58 per cent gave specific details such as their home address. Predictably, the survey found that children were secretive about their personal lives online, with less than 39 per cent sharing details about their online activities with their parents. Indeed, as previous studies have also pointed out, over 12 per cent children were also found to have been victims of some kind of cyber attack.
This affirms that the online behavioural patterns of children need to be seen in a different light and with lot more gravity and consciousness by Indian parents, the study notes. Tips to parents include positioning the computer in the main living space, educating children about the perils online, setting time limits, and yes, making sure that children do not reveal personally identifiable information.
