The State government will soon conduct a survey to identify persons with disabilities, Principal Secretary, Department for Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Amita Prasad, said here on Tuesday.

She was speaking at the inauguration of the Information and Counselling Centre for the Disabled at the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. She said the survey was likely to be conducted in December.

Ms. Prasad also said the department was planning to implement various schemes such as providing 1,000 talking laptops for visually challenged students who have passed SSLC, and starting a second Braille press in Gulbarga. She also said the department was proposing to procure computer tablets so that visually challenged students could study at home using the tablets. “We have sent a Rs. 6-crore proposal to the Union government in this regard,” she said.

She said that owing to lack of funds, the department was unable to provide physiotherapy for children with disabilities. K.S. Rajanna, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, said that even though 19 years had passed since the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 was passed, 32 departments in the State were yet to notify 3 per cent reservation for disabled persons.
