A team led by Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons V.S. Raju conducted a surprise raid on the high-security Gulbarga Central Prison on the outskirts of the city on Saturday morning.
The raid found no surprises in the facility, apart from the recovery of a mobile SIM card and Rs. 350 in cash.
There were unconfirmed reports of mobile calls made from the jail during the urban local body and State Assembly polls.
Narcotics supply
The raid comes in the wake of a reference to the indiscriminate use of mobiles and supply of narcotics inside jails, made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during a meeting with officials from the Police Department.
No narcotic substances were found in the jail.
Mr. Raju said that if a mobile was recovered from an inmate, that person would be charged with violating the jail manual, and henceforth the prisoner would not be given parole. He ordered an investigation into the recovery of the SIM card, and also warned of action against the prison authorities if any violations of the jail manual were found during the raids.
