The process of constructing a super-speciality hospital on the premises of the Karntaka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) will begin soon, Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil has said.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the KIMS Cancer Hospital here on Tuesday, he said that the hospital was sanctioned during the tenure of the United Progressive Alliance government. It would come up at a cost of Rs. 150 crore on a three-acre land. While the Union government had sanctioned Rs. 120 crore, the State government’s share would be Rs. 30 crore.
Dr. Patil said that tenders had been finalised and the hospital would come up in two years. Referring to the KIMS Cancer Hospital, he said that a similar cancer unit would come up at Kalaburagi and the one in Mysuru would be upgraded.
While emphasising the need for heads of medical institutions to take everyone into confidence, Dr. Patil appealed to doctors and other staff of the KIMS to work with sincerity and dedication. Minister for Mines and Geology and district in charge Vinay Kulkarni said that as there were doctors to waiting to serve in institutions such as the KIMS.
Those who feel that their salary was less and prefer to work in private hospitals should resign, he added. Srinivas Mane, MLC, however felt it was difficult to discharge duties at government hospitals as there was pressure on the doctors.
He appealed to elected representatives to support doctors.
Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar urged the State government to make efforts to get an All-India Institute of Medical Science sanctioned for north Karnataka.
Chief Minister’s parliamentary secretary and MLA C.S. Shivalli, the former chairman of the Legislative Council Veeranna Mattikatti, Prasad Abbayya, MLA, KIMS director Dattatreya Bant, principal K.F. Kammar, and director of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology K.B. Linge Gowda were present.
