A convict facing death penalty allegedly committed suicide inside the Hindalga central prison on Saturday evening. This incident has raised questions on the security arrangements in the prison.

The incident came to light after the jail authorities informed the Rural Police Station late night, after nearly three hours of the incident.

According to prison authorities, Nanjappa Shivananjappa (25), a bachelor, was convicted by a District and Sessions court in Mysuru in February 2013 on charges of attempt to rape and murder of a minor girl at his native village Yedahalli of Mysuru under Sections 376 and 302 of IPC.

Nanjappa hung himself with his bedsheet in the toilet of the prison at about 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. The staff from the Rural Police station, after the receipt of the information rushed to jail and conducted panchanama late night.

The relatives will be arriving on Sunday afternoon and the body will be handed over to them after post-mortem, official source said.
