The Shivamogga-Bhadravati Urban Development Authority (SUDA) on Saturday took possession of 62 acres of land in Urgadur locality here, which had been acquired earlier for formation of residential sites there.

The SUDA officials evicted the farmers, who had continued to cultivate the land even after acquisition. In the wake of eviction drive, a large number of police personnel had been deployed at Urgadur to prevent any untoward incident from happening.

Notifications

Earlier, SUDA had first issued a notification of acquisition of land in the locality in 1984, and a final notification to the same effect was issued in 1987. A sum of Rs. 30,000 an acre had been paid as compensation to farmers who had parted with their land for the project.

The SUDA had planned to develop 1,500 residential sites in the locality and distribute them among people at affordable prices.

Court order

However, of the 55 farmers, who had parted with their land for the project, a few had approached the court, seeking more compensation for their land.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court passed an order in favour of SUDA in this regard. Chairperson of SUDA N. Ramesh told presspersons here that in addition to the monetary relief that had been paid to farmers, a site measuring 60 ft. x 40 ft. each would be provided to every displaced family. The work of survey of land and fixation of boundaries has been completed by the officials of SUDA in this regard, he said.

Assistant Commissioner H.K. Krishnamurthy was present.
