Public hearing: People submitting a memorandum to the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner at Town Hall in Mangaluru on Saturday.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. has asked people to closely go through the draft coastal zone management plan map prepared as per CRZ notification dated January 6, 2011 and submit their objections, suggestions and comments by November 7.

The map is part of the draft Karnataka State Coastal Zone Management Plan prepared by the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management, Chennai. As part of the exercise to collect objections and suggestions, public hearings are being held in the coastal districts.

During the public hearing at Town Hall here on Saturday, Mr. Senthil said the draft plan map was available on www.karnataka.gov.in/ ksczma and at the office of Deputy Commissioner, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, tahsildars of Mangaluru and seven other coastal taluks, taluk panchayats and in respective gram panchayats.

“Objects need to be specific,” he said and asked people to make use of the opportunity to rectify errors, if any. “It will be difficult to rectify the error at a later date,” he said.

While welcoming inclusion of areas near Sasihitlu beach in zone 2 in the draft plan as it will help in development of the area, P. Gregory, a resident of Sasihiltu, sought to know status of notices already issued to residents for violations as the area was presently in zone 1 (in which new construction is barred). Mr. Gregory wanted to know whether the violations will be regularised with acceptance of the draft plan.

Sherill, a resident of Bolur, questioned earmarking a part of her land by Mangaluru Urban Development Authority for proposed Mangla Corniche road when the CRZ bars construction activity near the river side. President of Ullal City Municipal Council K. Hussain and president of Kanara Small Scale Industries’ Association Gaurav Hegde sought a separate meeting about the draft coastal management plan.
