Police sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande, who sustained serious head injuries during a gun fight with an alleged contract killer Munna Darbadar here on January 8, died at a super-speciality hospital in Hyderabad early on Wednesday.
The police officer who fell unconscious during the shootout did not regain consciousness despite the medical treatment that was provided initially in Gulbarga and thereafter in Hyderabad.
The news of the death of the police officer spread fast across Gulbarga city and other towns such as Aland, Sedam and Jewargi in the district. People set up road blocks at several places. A bandh was observed at most places even as the police clamped prohibitory orders to prevent any untoward incident.
Bande’s body, which will be brought from Hyderabad after a post-mortem, will be buried with State honours.
The police said that 15 platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and 10 platoons of the District Armed Reserve have been deployed across Gulbarga city and other sensitive areas, including Khajuri in Aland taluk (the birth place of the police officer where the body is expected to be buried).
According to reports, Mr. Bande was “brain dead” for the past four days and the doctors had kept him going with ventilator support. A team of doctors who attended on him all through had said that he could be shifted to London by an air ambulance provided he regained consciousness.
