The Mangaluru police is keeping a close vigil on sale and consumption of narcotic drugs in the city. If any student is found consuming cannabis or any other narcotic drugs he or she will be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Sanjeev M. Patil.
Speaking at a programme on World Anti-Drug Day at Vikas PU College on Saturday, Mr. Patil said police were now getting regular information on people consuming and supplying cannabis and other narcotic drugs in the city. “If you happen to consume drugs, then beware. You will be under our radar.”
Mr. Patil said in the first five months of this year the police have registered 63 cases under the NDPS Act. In 2015 they had registered 49 cases, followed by 21 in 2014 and 19 cases in 2013. Police have improved their network and they are getting information on a regular basis. Apart from persons in the city, they have arrested persons from neighbouring Shivamogga and also Kerala who were involved in selling cannabis.
Mr. Patil asked students not to fall prey to drugs that will affect them personally and academically. He asked students to call the police control room and provide information of persons selling cannabis and other narcotic drugs in the city. Police needs cooperation of public in combating the menace of drugs, he said.
