Hundreds of students of the Government College for Women on the Bangalore-Mysore highway boycotted classes and took out a rally here on Thursday in protest against the continued crimes on women and children.
On reaching the Deputy Commissioner’s office, the protesters demanded stringent action against those involved in the rape and molestation of girls.
Apart from urging the State and Union governments to amend the existing laws to ensure stringent punishment to those found guilty of rape and molestation, the protesters insisted on immediate arrest of culprits.
The protesters demanded death sentence to rapists.
They said that more power should be given to the Police Department for tackling crimes against women.
Raising slogans against the State government, the protesting students urged the Home Ministry to ensure expeditious investigation of such cases.
They stressed the need to set up fast-track courts for handling cases of sexual abuse against women.
Leela Appaji, principal of the Government College for Women, and members of a few non-governmental organisations participated in the protest.
