Twenty-six students from different parts of the State faced a mix of questions from current affairs, ancient history, sports and science at the All-India Radio’s State-level Quiz competition, held as part of National Youth Day on December 12.

Each team of two represented one of the 13 All-India Radio stations in Karnataka.

Unlike the regular quiz competition, participating teams were made to sit on a square table, as seen in music concerts. “We could not make any changes as the venue will be used for the ongoing music concert programme, which begins in the evening,” said Vasanth Kumar Perla, an executive of AIR Mangaluru, which is hosting the 14th edition of the competition.

The first round of the competition saw a close fight between the host AIR Mangaluru and AIR Dharwad teams that were tied at 125 points each at the end of seven rounds of questions. The Mangaluru team, comprising of Awais Ahmed and Varun Shreyas from the Expert PU College, bagged 30 points by answering all three questions in the tiebreaker round. J.S. Tilak Raj and Preetam Mestri from J.S.S. College from Dharwad got 20 points as they could not answer correctly the question on which is the longest railway track in the country. (The correct answer is the track between Jammu Tawi and Kanyakumari).

This was followed by three other rounds involving three teams each. Winners from each of the four rounds took part in the final round that was to commence by 2 p.m.

Mr. Perla said the quiz competition would be broadcast in the form of three 30-minute episodes on AIR channels across the State between January 10 and 12. This 30-minute episode will be part of the Yuvavani programme of Akashvani that is aired at 8 p.m.
