Stress on developing road infrastructure

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that the Outer Ring Road (ORR) may become “Inner Ring Road” in some years from now owing to the city’s rapid expansion. He suggested the development of road infrastructure keeping in view the increasing population.

“The city’s population had crossed 12 lakh and the number of vehicles is around 5 lakh. We should plan for the future with more such road projects,” he said.

Inaugurating the ORR built by the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission (JNNURM), he said that it is key for development and required for a city like Mysuru.

The ORR, with service road, had been open to traffic long back but the formal inauguration took place on Thursday.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that Rs. 50 crore will be sanctioned to the city for the development of inner roads.

The government had released funds for works, including the restoration of century-old Devaraja Market and Lansdowne Building. Funds had also been set aside for the construction of new DC office complex.

The construction of the branch of Sri Jayadeva Institute here at a cost of Rs. 120 crore is nearing completion. A district hospital had also been announced in the budget, he said. In the next two years, Mysuru will get more from the government for its growth, he announced.

“We have not taken publicity for all these works since people may feel that I am given money only to Mysuru. I spoke about how much money the city got from this government for your information,” he said.

Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake also spoke.

District in-charge Minister V Srinivas Prasad, PWD Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister for Cooperation H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, Minister for Social Welfare H. Anjaneya, MLAs G.T. Deve Gowda, Tanveer Sait, MUDA Chairman Mohan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner C. Shikha, MUDA Commissioner Mahesh, MCC Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath and others were present.

Earlier, the Chief Minister launched three grade separator works at the ORR junctions and inaugurated the Babu Jagjivan Ram Bhavan and Valmiki Bhavan.
