The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) on Thursday led a demonstration of street vendors in front of the Mysuru City Corporation office, demanding that the authorities set up hawking zones.

The protesters said instead of developing designated areas for street vendors, MCC was evicting them without thought, affecting their livelihood. In a memorandum to the MCC Commissioner, SUCI said the drive to evict street vendors should be stopped and a ‘Town Vending Committee’ be constituted before declaring no-hawking zones. The consent of the committee has to be taken before conducting such drives, they said.

According to the Street Vendors’ Act, 2014, vendors must be identified and issued certificate. This too should be enforced properly, the protesters demanded.
