Shobha Karandlaje, MP, said on Wednesday that the police should not arrest Hindutva activists in cattle trader Hussainabba’s death case as the post-mortem and FSL reports are still awaited.
She was speaking at a meeting organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bajrang Dal, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad to protest against the arrest of the activists.
Hussainabba, a cattle trader was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Shenarbettu near Perdoor in Udupi district on May 30.
His brother, Mohammed Ismail registered a complaint stating that Hussainabba was assaulted by Bajrang Dal activists and died in front of the police. In the course of the investigation in the case, the police had arrested 11 persons, including three policemen.
Ms. Karandlaje said cattle theft and illegal transportation of cattle could be stopped only by bringing in a tough anti-cow slaughter law.
Since Hussainabba had died in police custody, the case would sooner or later be handed over to the CID, she said, adding that the BJP does not believe that the CID would do justice to the case.
K. Raghupati Bhat, MLA, said the CID would not do an impartial probe as Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy was keen on using the case for political gains. He alleged that Mr. Kumaraswamy and top police officers from Bengaluru were already putting pressure on the local police in the case. “The truth will come out only if the State government hands over this case to the CBI,” Mr. Bhat said.
