Tension prevailed for a while in Karaya village near Uppinangady on Friday night, after stones were thrown on a few persons returning after attending the Virat Hindu Hrudaya Sangam in Puttur.

According to the police, this resulted in a crowd gathering and some vehicles got damaged.

Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. said a large number of police had been mobilised for the event. Adequate arrangements had been made to handle any eventuality, he said.

Mr. Sharanappa said he and other officers rushed to the spot and held discussions with the dissenting groups. "We were successful in reconciliation," he said.

Some persons, including four police men, were injured in the stone pelting. They have been admitted to a private hospital in Uppinangady.

The police were yet to receive complaints filed by the two groups. But they have registered suo motu cases for obstructing police from discharging their duty, Mr. Sharanappa said.

A large force of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and the Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed at the village, he said.
