Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Tuesday told the Legislative Assembly that the Government would not tolerate illegal extraction of sand by the “sand mafia” in different parts of the State and would take stern action against persons involved in the activity.

Replying to H.P. Manjunath during the Question Hour, Mr. Yeddyurappa said the mafia had been extracting sand without permission from the Government. To curb illegal mining activities, the District Task Force Committee had conducted raids and booked cases against five persons in Mysore district.

A total of 1,614 tonnes of sand stored illegally at Chikkahunsur village was seized and disposed of by public auction.

Illegal sand quarrying had stopped completely in the area, he said. The Government would soon bring out a new policy to check illegal extraction of sand, he said.

The Bangalore Development Authority has carried out demolition of 50 unauthorised constructions valued at Rs. 1,105.81 crore since January last year, he added.
