Steady inflow increases water-level at KRS

Inflow into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir near Srirangapatna, the lifeline of several districts in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, continued to remain steady on Thursday owing to copious rainfall in the Cauvery catchments of Kodagu district.

The good inflow rate has pushed up the water-level to 108.5 feet, against the full reservoir level of 124.8 feet.

Incessant rain

According to officials at Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL), the inflow into the reservoir was at the rate of 29,845 cusecs at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday.

However, the outflow was at the rate of 6,910 cusecs at the same period.

Cauvery catchments have been experiencing incessant rain for the last two weeks, which has increased the storage level.

The ‘live storage’ in the reservoir was 30,000 million cubic feet (tmcft) when the personnel of the Engineering Regulation Section (Gauging) at KRS measured the inflow rate at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday.

The inflow rate is expected to increase by Friday noon as the Cauvery’s catchments have been receiving heavy rainfall for the last 48 hours, a senior officer of Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. told The Hindu .

If the similar situation continues for another week, the KRS is expected to fill to its brim in the first week of August, the officer said.
