The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew its dharna in the Legislative Assembly on Monday after the government promised that it will table a report on the death of the police sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande, during a shootout with alleged contract killer Munna Darbadar in Gulbarga on January 8.

As soon as the House met, the BJP continued its dharna, which it had started on Friday, demanding a CBI probe into the death of the sub-inspector and the transfer of Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Mohammed Wazir Ahmed. The government rejected both the demands.

The issue sparked off a heated debate between members of the Opposition and the Congress, forcing Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa to adjourn the House for a while.

After working out a compromise between the Congress and the Opposition members in the Speaker’s chamber, Home Minister K.J. George told the House that the government would table a report in the House before the conclusion of the session on January 30.

Earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the BJP has been politicising the incident. The issue would not benefit the BJP politically and the Opposition would be held responsible for disruption of proceedings. Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was conducting the probe and action would be taken against IG Wazir Ahmed only based on the findings of the report.

Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar alleged that the deceased police officer had been suffering from mental harassment and statements made by Mallamma, widow of Bande, were primary evidence.
