After taking into account the fact that children are carrying heavy school bags, the Department of State Education Research and Training in October 2015 deputed four expert teams to visit over two dozen schools in the city. The survey found that the bags weighed between three kgs to 15 kgs.

The department had received suggestions from the public about measures to reduce the weight of school bags. These included tweaking the timetable to restrict the number of books and introducing a big bag day and a small bag day.

The department now plans to issue guidelines to schools before the commencement of the next academic year to ensure mechanisms to reduce the weight of school bags.
