State seeks written assurance from UoM

The State government, which directed the University of Mysore (UoM) to halt the recruitment process of more than 200 teaching faculty last month, has now sought a written assurance from the university.

The government letter on August 18, addressed to university’s Registrar C. Basavaraju, not only referred to the earlier direction dated July 11 to halt the recruitment process till further orders, but also threatened disciplinary action if a written assurance was not given to the State within three days.

The letter has been sent by R. Somashekar, Deputy Secretary to the Department of Higher Education (Universities). UoM had extended the last date for submitting applications to the posts of 208 teaching faculty even after Additional Chief Secretary to the Higher Education Department, Bharat Lal Meena, wrote to Vice-Chancellor K.S. Rangappa to halt the recruitment process citing violation in the roster system for reservation. UoM had extended the date for direct recruitment to posts of professors, associate professors and assistant professors from July 23 to 30.

Case booked

On Saturday, the city police booked the UoM’s Vice-Chancellor K.S. Rangappa and six others for their alleged involvement in irregularities committed during their tenure in Karnataka State Open University.

The irregularities pertained to alleged breach of trust in purchase of computers and furniture, besides handing over of a contract for development of software during 2012-13 and 2013-14. Following a direction from the Governor’s Secretariat, KSOU’s Financial Officer K. Khader Pasha had lodged a complaint. A case had been booked under Section 406 and 409 of the IPC, which deals with criminal breach of trust, against Prof. Rangappa, who was a former Vice-Chancellor of KSOU; M.G. Krishnan, also former Vice-Chancellor of KSOU; the then Dean and Deputy Registrar of Research Centres of KSOU T.D. Deve Gowda and Ramanatham Naidu, the then Registrars B.S. Vishwanath and P.S. Naik, besides the then Director of IT, KSOU, Kamalesh.
