The State government is not in favour of supplying milk in brickpacks to over 60 lakh schoolchildren across the State as proposed by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF). Instead, it is planning to take the help of milk producer’s societies in panchayats to supply milk.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Animal Husbandry T B. Jayachandra said the government was against supplying milk in brick packs because of high packaging cost. “Packing of 200 ml to 250 ml of milk in brickpack will cost around Rs. 8, which is more than the price of milk. It will be cheaper to distribute milk through women members of the mill producer’s society,” he said.
However, a final decision has not yet been taken. The mode of supply would be decided after discussions with the Chief Minister. It had not been decided whether milk should be supplied to students from anganwadi age to fifth standard or seventh standard, he said. “Supply of milk to them will help in their nourishment. In fact, Karnataka is one of the States that has a large number of malnourished children,” he added.
