Start-ups eye fresh talent

Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), one of the leading technical education institutions in Mysuru, has witnessed a marked increase in the recruitment by start-ups.

More than 15 start-ups turned up for campus recruitment this year and made 50 offers to final-year engineering students, Pradeep Manjunath, co-ordinator, Placement and Training, SJCE, Mysuru, told The Hindu .

“Last year, we had barely five to six start-ups visiting the campus for recruitment. This year, we have at least 15 of them, offering a minimum salary of Rs. 5 lakh per annum and a maximum of Rs. 13 lakh per annum,” he said.

Notwithstanding the scepticism associated with joining start-ups, Mr. Manjunath said the students also weighed the benefits of having work exposure in various departments of a company and the employee stock-ownership plans (ESOPS) that working with start-ups offer. Information Technology (IT) start-ups headed by college alumni too were among the companies that carried out recruitment this year.

Recruiters visiting the campus also included Fortune 500 and global IT companies. “We had Microsoft, LinkedIn, Oracle, Mercedes, and General Motors visit the campus. The highest offer made this year was Rs. 17 lakh per annum by an IT company based out of Bengaluru,” he added. A total of 85 companies made 790 offers to about 650 students in the seventh and eighth semester.

Unlike the previous years, students from core engineering branches like Mechanical and Civil engineering also received encouraging job offers this year. “Some companies offered jobs with salaries as high as Rs. 10 lakh for students from these branches,” he said.
