Stage set for ‘record-breaking’ yoga day event in Mysuru

The Mysuru district administration is leaving no stone unturned in its effort to create a Guinness world record by organising the largest mass yoga demonstration on the occasion of International Yoga Day at Mysuru Racecourse here on Wednesday.

On Monday, with only a day left for the event, the organisers were positive of drawing a huge number of yoga enthusiasts to the venue. Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep told reporters on Monday that participants can enter the venue from six designated gates; entry through Gate no. 7 is restricted to VIPs, organisers, officials and mediapersons.

Saying all the gates would open at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, he requested the participants to arrive early and avoid the last-minute rush. The gates are likely to be shut by 7 a.m.

Arrangements have been made to accommodate around 60,000 yoga enthusiasts at the venue for a mammoth yoga session. All the participants are supposed to bring yoga mats (or bedspreads/towels for performing asanas) and wear white T-shirts.

In all, 21 asanas will be performed in a span of 35 minutes (a Guinness record attempt). Mr. Randeep said 120 stewards have been appointed and trained for the event. Each steward has to handle 300 participants in a block.

Space for viewers

The yoga demonstration is expected to start around 7.30 a.m. and those interested can watch the proceedings from the viewers’ gallery of the racecourse.

The DC said 120 counters would be operated from 5 a.m., with three volunteers deployed in each counter for issuing bar-coded tickets to be scanned and kept with the organisers to show as proof of turnout.

Mr. Randeep said there are strict protocols to qualify for the record and participants should follow the rules to ensure the attempt does not go to waste.

“If 10% of the participants fail to comply with the rules, the entire attempt will get disqualified,” he said.

The highest number of bulk participants is likely from JSS educational institutions, which have promised to send 16,000 participants, mostly students and staff. They have been assigned Gate 1 for entry.
