Staff of aided educational institutions in north Karnataka took out a rally here on Saturday to press for various demands, including implementation of the recommendations of a legislature sub-committee headed by the former Minister Basavaraj Horatti on notional increment.

The protest was held under the aegis of the Karnataka State Pre-University College Employees’ Association, Federation of University and College Teachers Associations, Aided Polytechnic Employees’ Association, Secondary School Teachers’ Association and Guest Lecturers/PhD holders Association.

The participants were from Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi and other districts. They took out a rally from Kala Bhavan to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Legislators representing teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies in the Legislative Council, Mr. Horatti (JD-S), S.V. Sankanur (BJP), Arun Shahapuur (BJP) and Mahantesh Koujalagi (Congress) addressed them later.

The leaders said that aided educational institutions were being subjected to step-motherly treatment because most of them were located in districts in north Karnataka.

They said that it was the duty of the government to give them their dues as these institutions were actually sharing the burden of the government.

The protesters handed over a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to the district authorities.

Their other demands are implementation of the recommendations of Kumar Nayak Committee on correcting the disparity in the pay scales of PU college lecturers; special increment for PU college teachers who have passed NET/M Phil and have PhD degrees; application of pension scheme for those appointed after 2006; extension of Jyothi Sanjeevini scheme, among others.
