St. Philomena’s College gets ‘College of Excellence’ status

St. Philomena’s College is conferred with the coveted status of “College of Excellence” (CE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC) which comes into effect from Wednesday (April 1).

This status comes as a sequel to the “College with Potential for Excellence” (CPE) status granted five years ago.

Currently, this recognition is conferred on only three colleges in Karnataka and fourteen colleges all over India as on January 1, 2015.

The college established in 1946 has achieved many credentials during seven decades of yeomen service, a press release said.

The first private degree college in the city of Mysuru, St. Philomena’s College became autonomous during 2011.

In 2014, the college was accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade and 3.58 CGPA in the second cycle.

The college, a global village enjoys a wide diversity of student community from 19 states of India and 29 countries all over the world complementing the local population coming from various strata of the society.

“The latest teaching-learning and evaluation methods adapted are exemplary,” the release said.

The newly acquired CE status is another milestone achieved in the history of St. Philomena’s College. The CE status is granted with a generous funding of Rs. 2 crore to be utilised during a period of five years from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2020.

The grant is based on an evaluation of mandatory requirements. St. Philomena’s College is considered for the grant as it fulfils the mandate of being an autonomous institution with a CGPA score of more than 3.5, according to the release.

With this funding from UGC under CE status, the college intends to implement good governance, improve the academic excellence, enhance learning through faculty development, encourage research and innovation and improve infrastructural facilities.
