Kolar district has put up an impressive performance in the 2012-13 SSLC examinations the results of which were announced on Monday.
It has moved to the fourth place with 86.30 per cent pass from last year’s 21st place leaving educationally forward districts, including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi behind, bringing cheers as far as education is concerned in the area.
An eighth place in 2010-11 was the best ever performance by the district in SSLC examinations earlier.
As many as 18,441 candidates have passed the examinations of the 20,716 students who appeared for it.
M.R. Anilkumar of Venu Vidya Samsthe, Srinivaspur, stood first in the district with 615 marks, while L.D. Prateek of Kolar’s Chinmay School came second with 614 marks. R. Madhavi of Venu Vidya Samsthe secured the third place scoring 613 marks.
Only with strenuous efforts the district could get rid of the tag of being educationally backward in 2010-11 by jumping to the eighth place drawing the attention of the entire State and, this time finding a place among the top five.
The results for the last five years show how the district has made strides in SSLC examinations. It was placed 24th in 2007-08 and slipped to the 29th place in 2008-09. In 2009-10, the district fell further down getting the 30th place causing much worry in educational circles.
However, the steps taken by the authorities concerned they bore fruits the following year. In the 2010-11 academic year, the district recorded the best ever results in SSLC. Though it got the eighth place in 2010-11, it slipped to the 21st position in 2011-12 triggering concern among the people.
Undeterred by the falling results, the officials of the Education Department continued with their special efforts to prepare students to face the examinations with more confidence, said A.N. Nagendraprasad, nodal officer of SSLC examinations for the district.
The adaptation of 52 schools that had fared badly in the previous year, conducting night classes, three preparatory examinations, reviewing the results at the taluk level and such other activities were carried out rigorously to improve the results, Mr. Nagendraprasad told The Hindu here on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, DDPI S.V. Padmanabh congratulated students and teachers for their efforts in helping improve the results.
