The B.C. Alva Sports Complex, which has state-of-the-art facilities and has been constructed byNitte Education Trust on 12 acres of land, at a cost of Rs. 12 crore, will be inaugurated here on Thursday.
Addressing reporters here on Monday, N. Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor of Nitte University, said the facilities include a 14,000-sq.ft. indoor stadium which has three badminton courts, one basketball court, and corrom and table tennis facilities; a modern multi gymnasium; individual exercise stations for weight lifting and power lifting; and a fitness centre for athletes.
The outdoor facilities include a standard athletic track of 400 metres, facilities for all types of throwing and jumping sports, a pavilion with a fitness centre, a cricket field and three cement and clay cricket pitches, a hockey field, three volleyball and throwball courts, one handball court, two basketball courts, a football field, a kabaddi court, a kho-kho court and a netball court.
The multi gymnasium and the wooden-floored basketball indoor court were constructed at a cost of Rs. 2 crore, while the turf coated athletic track, cricket, football and hockey fields, pavilion, the outdoor basketball court and other facilities cost around Rs. 10 crore.
Former cricketer Javagal Srinath will inaugurate the complex at 4 p.m. on Thursay. K. Abhayachandra Jain, Minister for Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries, and N. Santosh Hegde, former Lokayukta, will be the chief guest.
Mr. Vinaya Hegde said Nitte Education Trust has always promoted sports. The institutions under the trust have a sport quota for students. It has supported budding sportsmen and women by providing them free education, food and hostel facilities.
Training is given by a team of experienced coaches, besides the provision of medical and physiotherapy facilities, he added.
On the future plans of the trust, Mr. Vinaya Hegde said a swimming pool of 50 metres, with eight lanes, and an indoor volleyball court and badminton court would soon be constructed at Nitte a cost of Rs. 6 crore.
He said they were in the process of purchasing 50 acres of land near Deralakatte in Mangaluru. Of this, 25 acres would be reserved for developing sports facilities.
“We plan to have a sports academy to encourage youngsters, especially students coming from rural areas,” he said.
