A special team, formed by the State government to crack down on illegal mining, seized 2.50 lakh tonnes of iron ore from stockyards of several iron trading companies during a raid.

The team, comprising forest, mines and geology and survey officials which commenced its operation in Bellary district on Thursday have booked cases against these companies on charges of violation of forest conservation laws, sources said.

In another raid 868 cubic meters of iron ore were seized from the mine area owned by an MLA. Another 295 cubic meters of iron ore were also seized from different mine during the raid, they said.
