Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake was flooded with memoranda and petitions from various organisations during his visit to the Shivamogga City Corporation on Monday.

The activists of Anna Hazarae Horata Samiti submitted a memorandum to Mr. Sorake requesting him to take measures to commence the service of the buses sanctioned for Shivamogga city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) at the earliest.

Under JnNURM, a total of 65 buses were sanctioned for the city in 2013.

An amount of Rs. 23 crore was sanctioned to purchase these buses and to setup a workshop.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has been entrusted with the responsibility to run these buses. T.M. Ashok Yadav, general secretary of the Samiti, expressed regret that there has been an inordinate delay in commencement of the bus service.

Functionaries of the Samiti N.L. Naik, Chikkaswamy B.M., Shivaswamy B.R. and Raju D. were present.

The activists of Shantaveri Gopala Gowda Samajawadi Adhyayana Kendra Trust also staged a demonstration when Mr. Sorake arrived at the venue demanding him to initiate measures to allot sites and houses for the families belonging to the low income groups under the Vajpayee Housing Scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, Trust managing trustee Kallur Megharaj said that in the year 2011, the then Shivamogga City Municipal Council, had invited application to distribute 2,030 sites for the poor at Govindapura and Gopishettykoppa under the Vajpayee Housing Scheme.

More than 17,000 people had submitted applications seeking sites and houses. The sites are yet to be allotted to the beneficiaries, he said.

Mr. Sorake assured the gathering of taking necessary action in this regard.
