The Karnataka State Women’s University has ventured into getting a conceptual rock garden developed to showcase the various facets of a woman’s life.

The work, which is under way on the premises of the university at a cost of ₹50 lakh, is the idea of Vice-Chancellor Sabiha, who wanted a unique garden that showcased the life of rural and urban women through clay models.

The university has entrusted the job to the T. B. Sulabakkanavar family of Haveri district. The Sulabakkanavar family has been involved in developing major rock garden projects in the State and elsewhere. Some of their projects include the rock garden in Almatti dam site, Navanagar of Balgalkot, rock garden on wildlife in Badami, among others. Harsha Sulabakkanavar, one of the family members who is overseeing the project, has been asked to prepare life-size sculptures of women crusaders such as Savitribai Phule, Mother Teresa, Chand Bibi, Amirbai Karnataki, and Akka Mahadevi.

Besides, the lives of rural women — them grinding grains using the traditional method, carrying pots, among others — will be on display.

The university also has plans to display life-size sculptures of women achievers, including Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi, athlete P.T. Usha, astronaut Kalpana Chwala, among others.

Apart from developing the rock garden, the university plans to extend green cover on the premises by planting various varieties of saplings from Andhra Pradesh.

The university is hoping to get the work completed before the commencement of the academic year in order to throw open the garden to the public. The completion of the project will give a different look to the lone women’s university in the State.
