Pulakeshinagar police on Friday arrested a software engineer who allegedly burned a woman to death at her home earlier this week.

The suspect, Arun Kumar, and the victim Bharani Kumar (26) were colleagues who shared a close friendship. However, she quit the company and married someone else following pressure from her family,

Sources said that even after her marriage, Arun tried to meet her. On the fateful day, he went to her residence in Jai Bharath Nagar, when she was alone. In the ensuing argument, Bharani fell unconscious. Arun, the police said, then carried her to the bed and set her on fire, before fleeing with a mobile phone and some gold jewellery.

The police, who first booked a suicide case, suspected murder when they found that some valuables were missing from the house.

Injured in cylinder leak

The accident occurred at a chawl where the couple, Nagaraj (35) and Lakshmi (26), live.

Nagaraj, a cab driver, had unwittingly left the mini gas cylinder on before falling asleep.

When Lakshmi, a manual labourer, returned home after work and tried to light it, the regulator of the cylinder dislodged itself and went flying in the air even as the gas ignited.

The couple, who sustained burns, was rushed to Victoria hospital and are said to be out of danger, said the police.
