Slum dwellers living at various places and in makeshift roadside tents staged a demonstration outside the office of Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday demanding residential plots. Organised under the banner of Raichur Slum Nivasigala Kriya Vedike, they alleged that the district administration was not following the State government order that directed the authorities to provide residential plots to eligible poor.
“Sufficient government lands bearing survey numbers 72/1, 73/2 and 93 at Eklaspur village in Raichur taluk have been identified for the purpose of providing residential plots to people of economically weaker sections who do not have homes or plots of their own. There is a government order dated 30.12.2014 that clearly directs authorities to provide plots to these poor sections. However, the Deputy Commissioner is not heeding either our pleadings or the government order,” Chandrashekhar Eklaspur, vedike leader, said during the agitation.
Janardhan Hallibenchi, another leader, said that six acres of land bearing survey number 1403 was handed over to the Karnataka Slum Development Board years ago, but the Board had not formed any residential layout for the houseless.
“The Vajpayee Urban Housing Scheme is being implemented at a good pace in almost all the districts except Raichur. As a result, the lands allocated for the urban housing projects for poor remained unused. We demand that the Deputy Commissioner look into the issue seriously and come up with a programme so that the houseless urban poor can get a shelter,” Mr. Jalibenchi said.
A memorandum was submitted to the office of Deputy Commissioner.
