In a bid to create greater public awareness to conserve tigers, the Mysore Zoo will celebrate International Tiger Day on Tuesday (July 29, 2014) with a slew of programmes.
The Executive Director of the zoo B.P. Ravi said in a release that Tiger Day is held annually on July 29 to generate worldwide attention on the imperatives of tiger conservation.
This is being observed after St. Petersburg Tiger Summit held in 2010 as wild tiger numbers in the world was inching close to extinction.
Mr. Ravi said many animal welfare organisations have pledged to help tigers and raise funds in this connection and the goal of the day is to promote the protection and expansion of wild tiger habitats and to gain support for their conservation.
Zoo programmes The zoo authorities will christen the cubs born to tigress Manya at 11 a.m. It has invited names from the public to christen the three cubs and the names will be drawn by lots.
Entries should reach the zoo before July 29 at 10 a.m. and the names may be sent to zoomysore@ gmail.com or by post.
Talk At 11.15 a.m. there will be a talk on Tigers in Captivity and another talk on Challenges in Tiger Conservation at 11.30 p.m. by experts in wildlife conservation.
