Sleeper coaches converted to ‘unreserved’ in select trains

October 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - MYSURU:

Finding seats on trains running between Mysuru and Bengaluru has just got easier. In order to accommodate more passengers, sleeper coaches of a few long-distance trains have been declared ‘unreserved coaches’ between the two cities.

Passengers holding unreserved tickets can travel in the earmarked sleeper coaches between Mysuru- Bengaluru and Bengaluru-Mysuru on these trains without paying additional sleeper charges that were up till now being collected. But to ensure that passengers travelling long distance and holding a confirmed berth are not put to inconvenience, the system has been modified and they will be issued tickets and berths in specified coaches. Entry into these coaches is barred for passengers holding an unreserved ticket.

While there was tremendous demand to increase the number of unreserved compartments, a survey indicated that a majority of the passengers travelling on some of these long-distance trains were bound for Bengaluru and were forced to find accommodation in the reserved coaches by paying additional charges. A senior official said the occupancy in the reserved coaches being about 10 per cent to 20 per cent, it was thought prudent to de-reserve a few coaches and declare them unreserved coaches on each of these trains for the benefit of passengers.
