The State government’s Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood (SDEL) has decided to provide a skill development training programme for about 10,000 domestic workers this year in different cities.

Training will be given to enhance skills in housekeeping, to create awareness about work safety, and on social security schemes such as provident fund and ESI, said Muralidhar Halappa, chairman, Karnataka Skill Development Corporation.

Depending on the availability of domestic workers, training will be given for 30 hours by paying an honorarium of ₹2,700. It was decided to set up a Karnataka Domestic Welfare Board for safeguarding the interests of domestic workers. Workers will be introduced to new technologies in housekeeping in offices, banking institutions, and business and commercial establishments. The workers will be given training and medical fitness certificates by the corporation. It will help workers get employment abroad, he said.

A workshop aided by the United Nations Development Programme was conducted in the city to identify institutions to provide training. Industrial bodies such as FKCCI, KASSIA, AWAKE, and government institutions have come forward to provide training in Bengaluru and other cities, Mr. Halappa said.
