An unused pit, dug to store foodgrains, claimed the life of a six-year-old girl in Anakasugur village of Shahpur taluk of Yadgir district.

Archana Mallappa, student of class I, fell into the 12-feet pit after the mud used to cover it collapsed. Her twin sister, Akshata, was also injured in the incident. The incident occurred when they walked on top of the pit, which had a covering of mud, while going to school, the police said. There was around four feet of water inside the pit and Archana drowned.

The body was retrieved by the villagers.

The police said that there are 200 similar pits in the village and all are unused.

When contacted, Prakash Hosmani, tahsildar of Shahapur, told The Hindu that instructions were given to the taluk panchayat executive officer to close the pits immediately.

A case of unnatural death was registered at Wadagera police station.
