The water levels at the six barrages across the Krishna and its tributaries Doodhganga and Vedganga in Chikodi taluk have risen further following sudden increase in rainfall in the catchment areas in Maharashtra since Thursday evening. This has resulted in increased outflow from the Almatti dam across Krishna river at the boundary of Vijayapura and Bagalkote districts on Thursday.
On Friday, sources said the rainfall that had declined to a considerable extent on Thursday morning had intensified later in the evening. A cumulative 1,21,110 cusecs of water was flowing into Krishna river, while 1,42,000 cusecs was being let out from all the 22 gates of Hippargi barrage. A huge quantity of 2,40,693 cusecs of water was being released from Almatti dam.
The large quantity of outflow from Hippargi barrage and Almatti dam had helped control the flood situation to some extent, sources told The Hindu.
Under water
All the six low-lying barrage-cum-bridges - Kallol-Yadur and Malikwad-Dattwad across the Krishna river, Karadga-Bhoj across Doodhganga river, and Bhojwadi-Konnur, Sidnal-Akkol and Jatrat-Bhivashi (all three) across Vedganga river - continued to be submerged on Friday. Even the Shree Dattatreya Temple remained fully surrounded by water due to swelling of Krishna river near Kallol-Yadur barrage. The Kudachi bridge across Krishna river in Raibag taluk also came under water around noon.
The villagers were using alternate roads. The water levels in all rivers was below the danger level, officials said and added that the official machinery was equipped to deal with any eventuality.
