At least six persons were burnt to death when a private bus caught fire after a technical snag at Metikurki village in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district in the early hours of Wednesday.

Ten others who were injured in the incident have been admitted to Chitradurga and Davangere government hospitals for treatment and are said to be out of danger.

IGP Parashivamurthy who inspected the spot told presspersons that the exact reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained as the driver of the bus is absconding. But some of the passengers in the bus have revealed that the bus caught fire owing to some technical snag, fell down and overturned when the driver attempted to take the vehicle to road side.

The bus was moving towards Bangalore from Davangere and the district police are making all possible efforts to contact the transport company authorities, he added.
