Stone pelting over police jeep at Yamanur, PSI injured

The situation in violence hit Navalgund town of Dharwad district continues to be tense, but is said to be currently under control. Personnel of the Rapid Action Force and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) led by the IGP of Northern Range Ramchandra Rao and other senior officials conducted a route march in the town on Friday.

After Thursday’s violence, in Navalgund alone, as many as 127 persons were arrested by the police in connection with five cases of arson, looting and damage to public property.

Superintendent of Police Dharmender Kumar Meena said prohibitory orders were being strictly enforced and the IGP Northern Range was camping in the town and monitoring the situation.

Stone pelting

Even as the situation seemed to returning to normality, a fresh case of stone pelting was reported in the neighbouring Yamanur village on Friday afternoon. A group of 35 men and women pelted stones at the jeep of Alnavar Police Sub Inspector while he was proceeding to Navalgund for bandobast.

While the windshield of the jeep was damaged, Sub Inspector Basavaraj Alagannavar sustained minor injuries on his hands. Immediately, additional forces were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, Mr. Meena said.

Arrests in Gadag

As many as 30 people have been arrested in the neighbouring Gadag district after the violent protests on Thursday. Gadag Superintendent of Police K.T. Balakrishna has said that 11 persons from Naragund and 19 persons from Gadag had been arrested so far.

Prohibitory orders are in place at Naragund town and taluk and holiday had been declared for the schools and colleges in the taluk.

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been deployed in the region to strengthen security.
