The situation in Hallikeri village in Navalgund Taluk of Dharwad district continues to be tense as the death toll in Thursday’s communal clash rose to three, with one more person succumbing to injuries here on Sunday.

Huchchappa Maruteppa Durgad, whose condition had been critical since the attack and was being treated at the Intensive Care Unit at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital, stopped responding to treatment and breathed his last on Sunday night.

The body was brought to the village where bandobast was put in place as a precautionary measure. The funeral was carried out under police vigil.

Earlier, N.H. Konaraddi, Navalgund MLA; and Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Cholan handed over a compensation cheque of Rs. 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased. The police said the situation was under control and that police pickets were still in place in the village.
