Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday, rebutting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allegations, said that it was in fact the previous Jagadish Shettar government that had stopped distribution of subsidised rice to above the poverty line (APL) cardholders through the public distribution system in the State.
Speaking to presspersons during the Janata Darshan programme here, the Chief Minister said that the Congress had only continued what had been started by the BJP.
There are about 34 lakh APL cardholders in the State. Mr. Siddaramaiah had announced the implementation of the scheme for providing rice at Re. 1 per kg from next month. The rice scheme will benefit 98.17 lakh BPL families.
The BJP government was distributing 20 kg of rice a month to each BPL family at Rs. 3 per kg.
