Siddaramaiah: implementation of irrigation projects high on agenda

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that implementation of irrigation projects in the State is high on the agenda of his government.

Mr. Siddaramaiah was speaking at a function at Kerehalli on Friday to launch the second phase of the project of filling tanks in Nanjangud, Chamarajanagar and Gundlupet taluks with Kabini waters.

Special interest

Stating that he had a special interest on the development of Chamarajanagar district, he said priority would be given to the demands of those elected from this district.

Third phase

The third phase of the project that involved filling of 26 tanks in Chamarajanagar taluk with Kabini waters would also be approved.

The project aimed at providing drinking water to the residents of 52 villages in Chamarajanagar and Nanjanagud taluks and the cattle there.

Scope of project

He said his government had decided to spend Rs. 60,000 crore on the implementation of irrigation projects in five years.

The proposed irrigation projects would include modernisation of feeder canals so as to make them reach the water to each farmland. Production of milk had increased owing to remunerative price being paid to suppliers.

The Ksheera Bhagya scheme had addressed the problem of malnutrition among schoolchildren.

Panel’s report

Special attention would be paid to developing backward areas, based on the Nanjundappa Commission’s report.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that Rs. 212 crore had been set aside for the project of filling tanks in Nanjangud, Chamarajanagar and Gundlupet taluks with Kabini waters .

Groundwork

The groundwork on the project had been initiated on February 15, 2012 and electrical work on December 30, 2013. The first phase of the project began on August 15 this year.

It consisted of filling Konanur, Bendaravadi, Kerehalli and Halepura tanks with Kabini waters.

The second phase was launched on Friday. On its completion, the Tammadahalli, Nanjandevanapura, Nanjedevanapura anemadu, Kalanahundi, Bedarapura Shivagange and Maligere tanks would be filled. The third stage would cover Shyanaradalli, Balachavadi, Terakanambi Doddakere, Terakanambi, Uthur, Kilagere, Melur, Narasamangala, Amachavadi and Nijalingapura tanks, he said.
