Siddalingaiah to inaugurate sahitya sammelan in Shivamogga today

Folklore expert Maheshwaraiah to preside over the event

The 10th district-level Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be held at Kuvempu Rangamandir here on March 5 and 6, said D. Manjunath, district unit president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

Book, cartoons and painting exhibitions, and cultural programmes will be held as part of the event, he said at a press conference here on Wednesday. Folklore expert H.M. Maheshwaraiah has been elected as the president of the sammelan. Renowned writer Siddalingaiah, who had presided over the 81st Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Shravanabelagola recently, will inaugurate the event on March 5 at 11 a.m. Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Rathnakar and poet N.S. Lakshminarayana Bhat will take part in the inaugural ceremony, he said.

He said that seminars will discuss mother tongue as medium of instruction, problems faced by women, agrarian crisis and promoting tourism in Malnad region.

Before the inaugural function, Mr. Maheshwaraiah will be taken out in a procession through the main streets of the city. The procession will be flagged off from Shivappa Nayaka Circle at 10 a.m., he added.

The valedictory ceremony will be held on March 6 at 7.30 p.m. Shivamogga MP B.S. Yeddyurappa, writers Na. D’Souza and R.K. Nallur Prasad will take part in the valedictory ceremony.

More than 3,000 people are expected to participate.
