Congress MLA Shivashankara Reddy N.H. has been unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa announced his unanimous election as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

He was the lone candidate to file nomination papers for the post on Wednesday, the last day for filing nominations.

Mr. Reddy, elected to the Lower House from Gauribidanur Assembly Constituency in Chickballapur district, was a member of the 11th, 12th and 13th Legislative Assembly. Born on September 24, 1954, Mr Reddy hold BSc degree in Agriculture.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed the name of Mr. Reddy while Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachnadra seconded it.

Mr. Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition H.D. Kumaraswamy, BJP Floor Leader and former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, KJP leader and former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, BSR Congress leader B. Sriramulu and several others congratulated Mr. Reddy for his election to the post.

The Chief Minister said “Mr. Reddy is the most decent legislator” and though he had the credentials of becoming a Minister in the government, his candidature was considered as “most suitable” for the Deputy Speaker’s post. He will conduct the House proceedings in a most transparent and non-partisan manner, he predicted.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said Mr. Reddy was aware of the social and economic reality at the local level since he had served as president of the gram panchayat and later elected to the Assembly for the first time in 1999.
